election subversion case and Trump’s other cases. The judge’s ruling followed a two-hour-long hearing in which she repeatedly sparred with Trump attorney John Lauro about the scope of any potential gag order and about the impact of Trump’s earlier provocative statements about potential witnesses and other participants in both the D.C. She also declined to restrict Trump’s claims that the prosecution is part of a political vendetta on the part of the Biden administration. Earlier this month, in an ongoing civil trial in New York over alleged business fraud by Trump and his companies, a Manhattan judge issued a limited gag order after Trump posted an attack on the judge’s top clerk.Ĭhutkan, who was appointed to the federal bench by former President Barack Obama, declined to impose restrictions on Trump’s ability to criticize Washington, D.C., or its residents. It is the second time in two weeks that a judge has tried to muzzle Trump’s attacks. The pronouncement raises the prospect that Trump could face punishment - ranging from restrictions on his use of social media all the way up to potential pretrial incarceration - if he continues to mount public attacks on Smith and his team or witnesses likely to testify in his March trial. She did not elaborate on those sanctions, although she said she planned to issue a written order with further details. She said she would consider “sanctions” if she observes any violations. Mark Milley, would have warranted the death penalty in another era, and he repeatedly blasted another, former Attorney General Bill Barr.Īcknowledging Trump’s broad right to weigh in on public policy issues as he pursues a second term in the White House, Chutkan said nevertheless that Trump could not launch a “pretrial smear campaign” against those who might testify against him. He suggested that one of them, retired Gen. Trump, who opted to campaign in Iowa rather than attend the hearing Monday, has also in recent weeks pointedly attacked several known witnesses in the case. He routinely uses his social media megaphone and rally speeches to assail his lead federal prosecutor, special counsel Jack Smith, as “deranged.” Trump also has taken to branding the lawyers working under Smith as “thugs.” Those comments, Chutkan said, risk poisoning the proceedings. You could spice it up with a few more ingredients or keep it simple.“This trial will not yield to the election cycle and we will not revisit the trial date,” Chutkan said.Ĭomplying with Chutkan’s order will require a significant shift in Trump’s public demeanor. This Thai chicken soup is easy to throw together and perfect for a light lunch or side dish. I was actually a bit surprised to come across a light and fresh soup recipe from my Aunt Kris (who we lovingly refer to as Ant Kris, though I don’t really remember why). Apparently my aunt was not a fan.įlipping through the pages of recipes, I can’t help but notice the abundance of heavy cream, Velveeta, and oleo. According to family lore, the sweet potatoes were horrible, and Don was even worse.Īnd I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I read the recipe for my grandma’s cranberry salad. My aunt invited her boyfriend Don to Thanksgiving dinner and made his favorite sweet potato dish. The jello was that bad.ĭandy Don’s gag-me-with-a-spoon sweet potatoes describes both a recipe and a boyfriend the family didn’t approve of. It was the only time my grandfather saw them spitting food out into a napkin and let them get away with it. We laughed when my dad told stories of being forced to eat my great-grandmother Meme’s beet jello, and how he spit it out into his napkin when she wasn’t looking. Growing up, I remember hearing stories of the famous family recipes. I also love reading this note I sent to my grandpa when I was “still 5”. Two of my favorite pictures are the one of my dad at age two, with big bright eyes that remind me of Joe,Īnd a stunning picture of my Grandma as “Miss Osage Hills 1946” appropriately placed on the Main Dishes page. The first few pages contain our family tree, poems about what it means to be a family, and photos of relatives I never had the chance to meet. I can barely remember the family reunion, the only one we’ve ever had, but the photos and history contained in this book take me way back. Lovingly typed and bound by my aunt 27 years ago, this cookbook is one of my most cherished possessions. When I found out this month’s theme for Recipe ReDux centered around vintage dishes, I immediately turned to my favorite vintage item in my kitchen, the 1985 family cookbook.
